New legislation across 20+ states is beginning to change that. Many International Trained Physicians are fully trained and experienced physicians who have practiced outside the United States. Due to limitations in the traditional residency system and a fixed number of training positions, many are unable to re enter practice despite demonstrated competency. In response, multiple states have adopted regulated alternate licensure pathways to help address physician shortages while maintaining patient safety.
